Rotten Fruit!

“A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.” Matt. 7:18

If you have ever dug up the courage to look at photos of abortion, or even worse…to watch a video of an actual abortion…you know how terribly evil it is. There are some things that can never be un-seen. They sear themselves into your conscience and you either have to decide to try to change things…or you have to bury it under distractions and force yourself not to think about it.

When I first became aware of the terrible judgment that we are under because of the holocaust and shedding of innocent blood, I became so focused on doing something about it that I naively thought that abortion was the only thing that needed to be “fixed” in order to save our nation. I tend to have an overly simplified view of things, and generally see things as either black or white. I remember thinking that if we could just end the legalization of abortion in our nation, that everything would be okay. In the past eleven years, my understanding has broadened, and although I still think that abortion is the most horrible injustice in the world right now and deserves to be fought against by everyone who calls themselves a Christian...I see now that abortion is the fruit of a culture that is completely rotten. Rotten to the core. God was kicked out a long time ago and we have only been able to survive this long because we have been running on the fumes of a past Christian era morality. Now those fumes are gone also.

The tree has been destroyed by rot, and so the fruit that it produces is rotten. There is no way to save it…it needs to be cut down and a new tree must be grown from the stump.

The reason for this 40 Days for Life blog continuing in between campaigns is to inspire and motivate people like you to continue to sacrifice your time periodically by helping us to cover the abortion hours at Planned Parenthood with prayer volunteers. So far, this post is not sounding very inspiring. I don’t want anyone to think that, just because we may have reached the point of no-return for our culture, that we should give up our fight to save lives from abortion! Actually, I think it is MORE important than ever to show up to pray and witness! Why? Well, just speaking for myself….I know that unless I actually DO something to COUNTER the evil that has taken over our culture…I risk becoming a part of it myself.

Just as a rotten piece of fruit, if it comes in contact with another fruit, will spread the rot…if I do not actively fight against the rot, I may begin to rot myself.

Speaking for myself again…I know that if I don’t have a regular prayer routine, consisting of a regular time of morning prayer, Mass at least 3 or 4 times a week, adoration in a chapel at least once, and two hours weekly on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood…I become lazy and worldly. I forget about God. I NEED the discipline of a spiritual routine in order to keep myself safe from the rot that is all around me.

Maybe you are luckier than me. Maybe you happen to be surrounded by a very good and holy family and work environment. Maybe holiness comes more easily to you than it does to me. Maybe you don’t need to make praying at an abortion clinic a part of your weekly prayer routine. But if you are like me…you need this…and WE NEED YOU!!!

We have quite a few times this week and next that we may have to cancel our presence in front of PP because a prayer volunteer has no one to stand with them. If you can help, please email me at nbruni@40daysforlifepgh.com. Here are the needs:

Tomorrow (Wed., 7/14) I have no partner from 7:30-9:30 and Dave has no one from 3:00-4:00.

We have discovered that abortions are scheduled for Thursdays now and would like to expand our presence to cover Thursdays from now on. If you are available anytime on Thursday mornings or afternoons, please let us know and we will do our best to find a partner for you.

Saturday, 7/17 from 2:00-3:00 Jason needs a partner.

Next week, (Fri. 7/23) Katie needs a partner from 11:00-12:00 and we have NO ONE from 12:00-1:00.

Saturday, 7/23, Bridget needs a partner from 10:00-11:00 and Kurt needs one from 11:00-12:00.

Thank you for being part of our 40 Days for Life family in Pittsburgh!

Your sister in Christ,

Nikki
