Wanted: Battle-Weary Warriors need Reinforcements!

MY STORY is one of a foolish girl…foolish in life, love and money.  Drinking too much, marrying too much, and divorcing too much.  If there was a poor decision to be made, she made it.  But thanks to God’s mercy, she discovered Him in the Bible and began going to church.  Through getting to know Him in His Word, she realized how foolish she had been, and how much her sin had hurt Him.  She repented one day and asked Him to use her in whatever way He chose.  In short, she surrendered her life to Him.

The way in which He chose to use her was in the pro life movement. Out of the blue! For no apparent reason, just from hearing a sermon about abortion by Rev. Dr. John Guest on the radio and then hearing about a campaign called 40 Days for Life…having never once ever done any sort of pro life activity before!  She began to follow the 40 Days for Life blog and to pray the daily prayers.  That was it.  Her heart was broken over abortion.  In tears every day, she asked the Lord what was happening to her.  She understood that He wanted her to get involved in the fight to end legalized abortion.  She was scared.  She had never done anything like this before. She was a hairdresser, for crying out loud!  What did she know about leading a pro life campaign? And she was a new Christian! How was she supposed to reach out to hundreds of churches?

But once someone gives themselves to the Lord, there is no saying “NO” when He calls.  And the Holy Spirit equips those He calls.  She was filled with zeal and an energy that she couldn’t believe!  She was all-consumed with researching church contacts and built a data base of over a thousand churches to mail and email to, to invite them to participate in 40 Days for Life.  Every day, from morning till night, she called and emailed pastors.  The first 40 Days for Life campaign in the fall of 2010, there were 40 churches that committed.  The second campaign, there were 80.  And every campaign since, there have been between 85 and 100 churches!

Now her twelfth 40 Days for Life campaign is ready to begin (on Feb. 10th).  When she first started doing this, she needed to know that there would be an end in sight…some sort of land mark to aim for.  I mean, how could she do this unless she thought it would be finished at some point?  She couldn’t just do this forever, could she?  This is all-consuming work that amounts almost to a full time job…but without pay!  It has completely changed her life!  So she said to herself, “Well…if I lead 12 campaigns, that will be six years. I can then have a Sabbath year rest.”  (See, she DID read the Bible…she did her homework!)

So now it has been six years. She is not the same person she was before she began this life-changing work of trying to unite the Body of Christ in prayer, fasting and peaceful witness to change hearts, save lives and bring about an end to abortionBut how can she quit? Planned Parenthood is still there, and they still silence approximately 50 beating hearts every week, right here in our city…at 933 Liberty Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh!  Her extremely dedicated team of sidewalk-prayer-warriors are getting weary.  They have done this so many times.  The faithful volunteers from all 90 churches are getting weary.  It seems that every campaign, the result is the same.  They put the announcement in the bulletin.  They speak from the pulpit.  But very few people respond.  It is the same few people each time.  Some can’t even get a single volunteer…but they come alone anyway.

Susan Praying

This Lent is arriving very early. February 10th.  It will be very cold on the sidewalk.  Will these battle weary warriors continue to stand in witness to the precious gift that is given to us in each human life?  Or will they start to dwindle away? Will this effort begin to die for lack of new recruits?

I don’t know how long the Lord will call me to continue doing this. I won’t quit after this campaign…but maybe there will be a reason I can no longer lead.  I am leaving it in His Hands.  If He wants me to keep doing this, I will.

I am writing this to ask you to please consider helping us fill our 40 Day prayer vigil at Planned Parenthood. If you have never made the sacrifice to drive to Pittsburgh…the hassle of parking and walking…standing on the noisy city sidewalk…holding a sign and praying for an end to abortion…please consider doing it during this Lenten campaign.  We need you.  If you can come, reply to this email and let me know.  I have to fill 480 hours with members of the Body of Christ…so it is important to coordinate the times of the different groups so they don’t overlap, thereby covering as many hours as possible.

If you do nothing else…would you at least consider using our bulletin inserts in your church bulletin so that your members will know about this 40 Days for Life campaign, and can participate individually if they want to?  Click https://40daysforlifepittsburgh.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/flyer-Lent-16.pdf to view the flyer.  We only ask to be reimbursed for our cost, which is just $4 per hundred (plus mailing). You could also copy and paste this bulletin announcement https://40daysforlifepittsburgh.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/SAMPLE-BULLETIN-ANNOUNCEMENT-LENT-2016-blue.pdf

Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you and God bless you,

Nikki Bruni

Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life Pittsburgh

P.S. I have done a large painting, memorializing the innocent lives lost at Pittsburgh’s Planned Parenthood in 2013.  (There were 2,366 of them.)  This painting is called “The Innocents”, and I loan this painting (for free), to any church that wishes to host it for a week.  The painting is currently scheduled to be shown at 30 churches, from now through May 7th.  If you would like me to bring this painting to your church, please reply to this email to schedule it. Here is a picture of the painting (with my husband and me standing in front):

You could have worked 1,000 years and not come up with a better letter. As you so often do, you let your heart lead you as you wrote this – and you let your heart show. And whatever response is generated will be from your willingness to be so painfully honest and so vulnerable. Thank you.

    Hi Nikki,
Great letter! Thanks for sharing what is also in the hearts of your team members. When Al and I did our first 40 Days in the Fall of 2o07, with very few on the sidewalk with us, we did not know that there would be another in Lent of 2008 and another in the Fall, etc, etc. When I found out about all the campaigns to come I didn’t even want to think down the road that far. I had done my bit. I was tired and I was finished!! But we know we can’t be finished until abortion ends.
So here we are, much older and more tired, planning to be on the sidewalk at PP for Lent of 2016, knowing very well that it will be very cold and snowy and knowing that abortion most likely will still be going on for many years to come. We’ll try to be there until God takes us out. We know He is calling others to join us, and some day to replace us. We hope they are listening and will say, “Yes Lord”. We really need some new younger troops.

Thank you Sally. It is your commitment (and Al’s and Bob’s) that inspires so many of us to persevere. You are a blessing to our pro life movement in Pittsburgh. God has used you in a mighty way in my life!
