We kicked off our fall 40 Days for Life last night with about 130 brothers and sisters in the beautiful Synod Hall in Oakland. Inspired by the music of Aaron Greer and the Holy-Spirit filled words of Fr. Joe Freedy and Pastor Adam Stump…we are now READY TO ROLL for these 40 Days FOR LIFE!!! Our tank is full and we are ready for the long journey ahead. Thanks to everyone who helped make our kick off event a success last night!
Now…onto the vigil reports for today!
Sue McGrath was the first shift manager of the day (from 7-9am). Sue wrote:
This mild and fall-like morning I had the honor of serving as shift manager for the very first shift of this Fall 2015 vigil. It was wonderful and inspiring to see Diane and Tom D. again ……. so cheerful and smiling on the first of their 80 twice-daily runs to and from downtown Pittsburgh which they do during each and every 40 Days campaign in their ministry of setting up and taking down our signs and materials. Those two are just out of this world! I was blessed by the company of prayerful ladies from of St. Peter’s in Steubenville, OH, as you’ll see in the photo. Faithful long-timers Marian C., Bill H., and Pat M. stopped by too. We prayed individually and as groups. Marian also offered literature to the passersby.
As is normal for this shift, many people on their ways to work and school passed by. The comments were mostly positive, but I do remember three polite yet oppositional comments. Several women entered Planned Parenthood, most of whom I could tell are employees, but I did see two young teenaged or twentysomething girls enter whom I know are not employees. I offered them literature for alternatives to PP, but they refused. Please pray for their conversion and the conversion of everyone entering Planned Parenthood this week, whether as employees or “patients.” And may GOD BLESS YOU ALL as you participate in 40 Days for Life!
Sincerely, Sue M.
Rev. John Patterson and his wife Carol “subbed” for the 9-11am shift while “regular” Wednesday shift manager, Cathy is in Norway visiting her daughter. Thanks Rev. John and Carol!
When I (Nikki) arrived for my 11a-1p shift, I was informed that it appeared that Planned Parenthood was doing abortions today. Even though Wednesday is not a regular abortion day, many couples and mother-daughter groups had gone in. They continued to go in during my shift as well. Sadly, one young girl went in with her mother…and she didn’t look more than 14 or 15 years old! She was a pretty, petite girl, and was holding a stuffed animal or some sort of blanket! They refused any information and went in. Later, one of the ladies from St. Peter came over and told me that a young man had just exited and walked past her, and she noticed that there were tears in his eyes. She informed me that he had a pink shirt on, so I tried to watch for him to offer him some information about post abortion healing for men, but I never saw him.
This is such a sad ministry that we are called to! We could not do it without putting all our trust in the Lord! HE will help and sustain us! He will strengthen us! And He gives us EACH OTHER to encourage us! I sure was encouraged by the wonderful folks from the CIM-PA group (Cultural Impact Ministry-PA) from Christ Church Grove Farm, who had the 11a-3p shift today! It was an honor to stand, pray and even sing with them today!
I am happy to report that I noticed many more positive comments, (thank-you for being here, God bless you…) than is normal! Maybe the culture is beginning to wake up in the aftermath of the undercover videos!
Bill from CIM-PA had a really powerful sign that he got from the rally in front of PP a few weeks ago. It really says it all…
At a few minutes before 1, my replacement shift manager, Chris arrived to take over. It is always a blessing to see his friendly face! Here is his report from the 1-3pm shift:
When I arrived, Nikki informed me that, unlike most weeks, today, Wednesday, was an abortion day. The sidewalk traffic was relatively heavy during my shift. As we all experience, most passersby simply stared straight ahead and made no eye contact with us. A handful of people said “God bless you” and others offered encouragement. A number of young women entered Planned Parenthood during the two hours— several by themselves and several accompanied by a man. Several men were “hanging around” PP, going in and out multiple times. I was told by one of our group that they were pimps who had accompanied several women to PP.
I was joined by faithful prayer warriors Joyce and Judy from CIM of Pennsylvania and Tony from St. Joan of Arc parish. What a beautiful day God gave us to witness and pray for the unborn children and their mothers & fathers entering PP. Much better weather than the February/March 40 Days for Life campaign
Richard,, and Audrey & Jim managed the last two shifts, and had witnesses from Living Hope Church in Whitney, PA praying with them. Stories and photos will be posted later as they come in.
