Dear 40 Days for Life family,
And so it goes…another 40 days has ended. Thank you to everyone who prayed, witnessed, fasted and contributed in any way to our 40 Days for Life fall campaign…including members from 89 churches from all around Pittsburgh and beyond!!! Last night we gathered together to close out the 40 day vigil at Planned Parenthood and then enjoyed fun, fellowship and music by INTENT at the Catholic Charities Welcome Center. Photos are be posted at the bottom of this page, but first I just want to leave you with a word of encouragement.
The battle to restore dignity and respect to all human life can be a discouraging one. We all know that. We are fighting against the culture, and sometimes can feel like we are David going up against Goliath! That is why 40 Days for Life WORKS! We are not trying to fight Goliath on our own. In fact, we are not the ones fighting AT ALL! It is OUR FATHER who is fighting for us! In fact, I was at an evangelization seminar on Saturday and Fr. Joe Freedy gave an analogy that really spoke to me.
He told of seeing a small boy at Kennywood with his parents. This was his very first experience at the park, and he was completely enthralled by the sights, sounds and smells all around him! With his mom holding one of his hands and his father the other, he walked through the park, in awe of the people all around him. The sounds of the roller coaster rumbling as he walked under the Thunderbolt thrilled him. The smell of the Potato Patch captivated him…and he was enchanted with the music playing from the Merry-Go-Round.
But suppose this young boy suddenly became separated from his parents…LOST! Kennywood would remain the same…with the same sights, sounds and smells…but the little boy’s experience of it would be drastically different! Wandering through the park all alone, he would be terribly frightened by everything around him. Those same things that seemed exciting before would now be terrifying to him!
This is the difference we experience when we fight abortion while clinging to God’s hand! We are safe and secure and have no worries! Sure, we are human and seeing the devastation that abortion is causing discourages us. But with our Father by our side, we can courageously trudge on…never giving up!
Pastor Keith Tucci led the closing prayers last night, and the closing line of one of the prayers goes as follows:
“Lord, in our work for you, may we find you. In our efforts to change the world, may we ourselves be changed.”
And isn’t that the truth? I can speak for myself when I say that I am not the same person that I was before I began pro-life work. My faith has been deepened in a way I never thought possible. My trust in God has been strengthened and I think I am less self-absorbed (I Hope!). It is a joy to see others working alongside of me, also being changed, strengthened and growing in faith and trust in God! Thank you for joining our 40 Days for Life family in Pittsburgh!
The next 40 days begins on Ash Wednesday, which is February 18th! This will test our commitment to sacrificial love…as it will be VERY COLD! It is my goal to recruit more vigil shift managers so that none of our shift managers have to stand for more than 2-hour shifts. If you are feeling the tug from the Holy Spirit to help us during the next campaign by volunteering for a regular 2-hour per week shift as a vigil manager, please contact me to let me know! Until then, have a blessed Thanksgiving, Christmas and new year! I will be talking with you again in January.
