Our Lenten campaign begins on March 5th …and we have already been busy preparing to make this the best 40 Days for Life our city has yet seen!
- Joan at PCUC has diligently stuffed 1,400 envelopes, which she mailed to churches all around our city…asking for their participation in this campaign. Please consider a donation to offset the cost of our printing and mailing expenses! Send a tax-deductible check for any amount, made out to PA Foundation for Life, and mail to People Concerned for the Unborn Child, 3050 Pioneer Ave., Pittsburgh 15226. THANK YOU!!!
- A generous local church donated their printing services to print over 30,000 campaign flyers, which we are offering to any church that wants them, to help them get the word out about 40 Days for Life to their congregations. 25,000 of them have already been ordered by over 40 local churches! Contact Nikki at email@example.com if you would like to order some for your church for just $1.00 per hundred!) You can view these inserts at https://40daysforlifepittsburgh.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/40-Days-for-Life-spring-14-flyer-with-kick-off.pdf (Please note that we are all out of the 8 ½ x 11 flyers. We only have the half-page 2-sided inserts left!)
- Over 40 of the 120 four-hour vigil slots have already been adopted by church groups! We are one-third of the way there! Now, I have a favor to ask you. As we continue to prepare all the practical aspects of this up-coming 40 Days for Life (filling the vigil…getting the word out through emails and phone calls…holding planning meetings…planning the kick-off event…etc.)…I would like to ask YOU to begin to prepare your HEART for these 40 days!
You probably know that 40 Days for Life is based on 2Chronicles 7:14, which says, “If My people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my holy face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin and heal their land.” Now if we REALLY believe this, (which I DO!!!)…then we need to take this endeavor to pray, fast and witness seriously!
So let’s break this verse down a bit. What is God asking us to do for forty days? To humble ourselves! Well, if you have ever participated in our prayer vigil in front of Planned Parenthood…you have been humbled! (You may even have been given the opportunity to obey Jesus’ command to bless those who curse you!)
He also tells us to pray and seek His face. Prayer is an obvious part of 40 Days for Life. Together we unite as we pray the daily 40 Days devotional prayers. (Go to http://40daysforlife.com/pittsburgh.html and click “Get the Latest” to register to receive the daily devotional prayers by email.) Along with prayer…because our Lord said that some demons are only driven out through prayer AND fasting…we also take part in a coordinated 40-day liquids-only fast by having at least one person in our 40 Days for Life community fasting from food for each of the 40 days! (Go to http://www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/1056396620021 to sign up) Please note that this fast is not meant to replace individuals fasting however they feel led during the entire 40 days. Everyone is encouraged to give something up. (Sweets, alcohol or television are just some examples.)
But that last part of the verse is little more difficult. God tells us we must also turn from our wicked ways. Surely God doesn’t think WE need to turn from OUR wicked ways…does He? I mean, WE are not the wicked ones…the pro-aborts are…right?
Well, let’s think about this for a minute. I must admit that, as a pro-lifer…I know I am on God’s side! I am doing HIS work! I know I am in the right! And, I know that everyone who thinks its okay to kill a helpless baby in the name of “choice” is wrong! It is a simple, easy to understand concept. Killing innocent human life is wrong. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Yet somehow almost half of our nation’s population…and even its churches…disagree! SO…I sometimes find myself feeling a little superior, and even a little bitter. I mean…how can my friends, family and neighbors entertain themselves while ignoring the horror that is going on all around them? Why aren’t they bothered by it? Why don’t more pastors speak out against it? Why don’t more Christians overcome their timidity and witness publicly for the dignity and sanctity of human life? Why is there so much apathy about the killing of 56 million human beings by abortion?
Hmmm….where there is bitterness…love cannot grow. Where there is despair, Hope cannot live. You know what? I need to prepare my heart! I NEED TO TURN FROM MY WICKED WAYS!
In my reading yesterday, I came across this quote from St. John Bosco:
“There must be no hostility in our minds, no contempt in our eyes, no insult on our lips. We must use mercy for the present and have hope for the future, as is fitting for true fathers who are eager for real correction and improvement. In serious matters it is better to beg God humbly than to send forth a flood of words that will only offend the listeners and have no effect on those who are guilty.”
I also reflected on the old testament reading from yesterday, which tells the story of David murdering Uriah because he wanted to cover his sin with Bathsheba. Talk about an injustice! I mean, poor Uriah! He did nothing wrong! He was totally innocent! He was fighting for the king…putting his very life on the line for him. And, when King David called him home from the battle to meet with him…he must have been completely bewildered! Can you imagine how nervous he must have been to be called in front of the king? Even when David flattered him and told him to go home to his wife to take a little break from the war….Uriah was so honorable that he would not do it. Even when David purposely made him drunk…Uriah would not shirk his duty to the king’s army. So, David sent him back to the battle and gave his general the command to place Uriah in the most vulnerable place on the front line and when the fighting got fierce…to pull back and leave him alone to be killed.
Yet God forgave David! That gives me hope! Even though our nation is guilty of the shedding of the innocent blood of 56 million innocent children by abortion….IF WE REPENT…God could forgive us too! This reading also convicted me that I am wrong to feel superior to those who condone or are involved in the abortion industry. After all, if God could forgive David of HIS sin…He can certainly forgive any person who repents! So who am I to judge them? It is my place to PRAY for them and to show them through my actions the TRUTH and the LIFE, which is in Christ Jesus!
So, let’s begin now to prepare our hearts for this up-coming 40 days. Let’s dig up the hard-packed soil of our hearts so the Holy Spirit can do His work in us!
I am expecting miracles to happen…and I can’t wait to share them with you!
If you are a fellow K-Love listener (if you like contemporary Christian music)….check out this song by Mark Schutz called “40 Days”…it could be our theme song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37O1T5waNsY It is very uplifting and the lyrics are very appropriate to the mission of 40 Days for Life.
These are just my thoughts. Thanks for reading them. Hope to hear from you soon! And again, please consider donating any amount you can to our Lenten campaign.
God bless you!
Here are the lyrics to the March Schultz song “40 Days”:
And it’s like 40 days out in the desert
Feeling like I’m lost forever
And crying out for You
But in these 40 days I’m going to seek You
With my heart because I believe You
Have brought me to this place
These 40 days
Lord, Your ways are not my own
But I trust You
Lord, You say, ‘You are not alone,
For I am with you”
