It was so encouraging to see our 40 Days for Life community band together today to help us fill the vigil! Especially on such a bitter cold day, my heart was warmed by the genuine love and sacrifice shown by these wonderful people!
Here are some photos and stories from today:
Cathy, who managed the first two hours from 7-9am wrote:
During the second hour, which I shared with Susan, a group of older men on their way to work crossed the street in front of us. One of the guys hung back, then shared that his girlfriend had had an abortion (I didn’t catch when) but didn’t tell him for five months. He seemed very sad about this. We gave him some post-abortion materials and he went on, to catch up with his co-workers who were calling him. The pain just doesn’t go away.
Later this morning, shift manager Kathy said something interesting happened. She wrote:
Two hours today went pretty quickly thanks to Kathy, Mary pat, and William. Many girls and women went in and out of Planned Parenthood. A man from the Health Dept. went into the clinic but came right back out and then spoke loudly into the outdoor intercom, identifying himself as being from the Health Dept. Then he went in second time but again came back out to talk loudly into intercom,s aying they were not unlocking a second door for him to enter. He finally entered, but when he left, he said,”God bless” to us while he was shaking his head.
While this large group was busy praying and singing, one woman from their group stationed herself on the other side of Planned Parenthood’s entrance, with pro-life literature in hand. She gave out much information to women entering and leaving the clinic…and in fact one young woman asked her where she could go to get a pregnancy test. It seems that PP wasn’t doing pregnancy tests today!!! So, we directed her across the river to the Women’s Choice Network center in the Northside. She said she would go straight there! Praise God for a young mother rescued from the clutches of Planned Parenthood and delivered instead into the warm and caring arms of Womens Choice Network!
After the Guardians for Life left at 1pm, I was alone for only about 10 minutes. Something amazing happened during that time! I was sitting on my chair, and I noticed a woman checking out my fetal models. I got up and walked over to her and invited her to pick them up, telling her that they are made to be the same weight and feel of real babies. She seemed amazed as she was holding them, and asked me if this is really how they look. She told me that she used to work at this Planned Parenthood clinic! I asked what she did, and she told me that she had to assist in the abortions! She said that they were deceptive when they hired her. They only told her that she would be assisting in “Gynecological procedures”. She seemed to be sad and regretful, as she gazed at the fetal models. I asked if she had ever heard of Abby Johnson, and she had not. So, I told her the story and told her about her ministry to former abortion clinic workers. I told her that if she is dealing with guilt or remorse, that they could help her find healing. I had a copy of the 40 Days for Life book (I WISH I had Abby’s book Un-Planned) which I gave to her. She was very happy to receive the gift and thanked me. I pray that God is going to use her testimony some day!
What a blessed shift I had today! Thank you for everyone who is praying, fasting and who came to the vigil today! Thanks also to Jeff, who signed up to stand with Barbara tonight from 5-7!
Barbara, who managed the third shift was going to be all alone, as of yesterday. But many good people answered the call and came to stand with her! Here are the photos:
Barbara wrote this beautiful and funny account of her shift today:
Today I am ready for the cold. I have on so many clothes that if I am bumped I will fall to the ground and need help getting up, like the little brother in, The Christmas Story…or I will bounce like the dough boy in Ghost Busters.
Richard, Gwen, Colleen, Seamus, Diane, John, Sara and Jeffrey joined us in prayer today. A man whom I had seen glancing at and then passing us many times over last year, stopped today and asked to join us in a “Hail Mary.” Loud angry comments came from two different men who passed quickly and declined to stop and talk. “You will be the ones going to hell.” “Mind your own business.” More than 15 people thanked us for being there.
On the sidewalk in front of the book store someone hung a little poster noting the hypocrisy of people who pray in public so that people will see them. We pray in public and, yes, we pray knowing that the public will see us. In a country that sings the praises, and funds the myriad programs, and promotes the celebrity leaders of Planned Parenthood (America’s primary abortion provider), people should publicly stand up, speak out and pray. Plenty of people do. We are some of them.
Wednesday’s readings in the Catholic Mass retell the story of Jonah and the city of Nineveh. “…Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD’s bidding.” “ ‘Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,’ when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.” “When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out.”
God is love. People involved in any way in supporting abortion separate themselves from God. They are victims of the devil’s web of abortion lies.
Psalm 51 sings God’s terms for reconciliation, heart to heart.
“My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit; a heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.” When a person seeks God in repentance, God welcomes them and forgives each and every one of their sins, completely.
We 40 Days volunteers admit that we are sinners. The weight of our sinfulness strengthens our resolve to help other people struggling with sin. Won’t you join us these 40 days on the corner of Liberty and Smithfield? Join us as we pray, fast, reach out and repent.
Megan Merante is coordinating our 40 day fast from food, throughout our 40 Days for Life community. She shared the following comments from fasting participants…I just want to share them with you to encourage you:
Megan, Thank you for the email. In regards to the fast. It was the first fast I over did and I have anew respect for Jesus Christ. It was tough but I’m glad I did stayed true to my committment. At 12:01am I enjoyed a small bag of Bar-B-Que chips. LaToya
Megan, it went well (& better than I would have bet). I’d share the following to sum it up-“The Lord prepared the road before me to meet the challenge. All things done for the greater glory of God!” Have a great day, Owen
The fast went well… the Lord brought to mind all day the scripture about how we are knit in our mothers womb and i saw in my mind how abortion RIPS a baby from its mothers womb….it is a devestating thought ….abortion is so wrong, so savage, so uncivilized…..murder in the first degree! God help us! God help our nation!
my prayers focused on changing the hearts of those seeking abortion, those performing abortions and those making laws concerning abortion….it was a priveledge to be part of this…..God Bless you and all your efforts on behalf of the unborn,,,,,lucy
