Day 4: Guardians for Life, St. Vincent College, Ave Maria Church, and St. Sebastian’s hold forth

It was a cold, dry morning, and Planned Parenthood was very busy, as they have been every weekend. We were blessed with 3 sidewalk counselors this morning. There might have been a turnaround!

Our first shift was blessed with Guardians For Life of Indiana and Westmoreland County (a.k.a. “Fr. Tim’s Group”)

Many other local people, including Pastor Adam Stump, whose wife will be delivering their second child in the next few weeks (That’s Pastor Adam in the clerical collar and cowboy hat, over the shoulder of Fr. Tim up front).

We even had a man from Denver Colorado!

Students from St. Vincent's College

and a nice group from St. Vincent College, praying the entire morning.

Second Shift Manager, Lindsay, took these photos:

Mike, Deb and John from Ave Maria in Bentleyville

Lindsay wrote:

Today was a very cold day, yet made tolerable thanks to the warm hearts of the parishioners at Ave Maria Parish which stood in prayer with me for the entire 4 hour shift!  I was deeply inspired by their faith and selflessness. They came a very long distance (probably about a 1 hour:15 minute drive or longer) to pray for the unborn, and unlike myself, they never once complained about the cold! Pictured are John, Mike, and Deb from Ave Maria.
Two other selfless men also joined us for a long time. They each drove at least 1 hour:30 minutes! Walter of St. Therese Uniontown, and Dan of Holy Family Steubenville.  I also had a nice surprise the last 20 minutes of my shift when my former priest at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal (retired now) Fr. John O’Shea came by and led us in a Rosary. Fr. John was my and my husbands inspiration to step out in faith to pray outside of Pittsburgh’s abortion clinic, he very often spoke out against abortion and other intrinsic evils of our culture right from the pulpit!  He is our hero. I can’t say that anything else exciting or profound happened to our prayer group Saturday. It seemed like there were abundant groups of teen/20-ish groups walking around, as if for college orientations? They were for the most part very supportive and took various pro-life flyers from us. So it was a very good day for community outreach to Planned Parenthood’s target market of very young adults.  One final commentary…have any of you ever noticed how dirty the Planned Parenthood windows are? The display was empty and full of grime and dust. I am always amazed any girl would walk into such a dreary, filthy building for “health services”.  I’ve seen cleaner veterinary clinics! But posted on those grimy windows I did notice one small sign, Planned Parenthood showing their support to end violence against women. I had to laugh in disbelief when I saw that sign…

Can you think of anything more violent against women then abortion?  Not only against the mother, who has her cervix painfully forced open so as to diabolically remove the growing life within her. But, also brutal violence against the unborn female (and male) babies!  I can’t think of a more violent act against a growing woman than to tear her limb-for-limb from her own mother’s womb.

Veterinary clinics are cleaner and more inviting to enter then this “women’s health clinic”!

Third shift Manager Maggie took this photo of the devoted prayer volunteers who braved the cold to witness and pray for an end to abortion:

Many prayer volunteers came from St. Sebastian!

Maggie wrote:

I had a great crew of prayer warriors from Saint Sebastian and another from Saint Joan of arc.  Sadness filled my heart and soul as I watched 3 couples leave. I noticed the boy trying to comfort the girl and she pulled away. I thought to myself their life has changed forever and they will one day need to face what they did.

I watched the workers pass by and I desperately wanted to shout out like John the Baptist ‘REPENT!’ Find a noble profession and leave this life of horror!  But God brought along some grandfathers soon who had stories to share. The first man shouted “YES” from across the street. He crossed over to let us kmow a young woman considering abortion of her twins decided to keep them and he wanted to share the good news with us and tell us to keep on witnessing.  The other man told us his daughter was having her baby shower this weekend. In October she seriously considered aborting because she found out her fiancée was two-timing on her but with encouragement from others she kept her child. He did a little jump in happiness thinking of his little grandson.  He also shared that when he was young two of his girlfriends had abortions.  One of the sidewalk counselors years back gave him the precious feet and told him to forgive himself after asking God’s forgiveness and told him to name the children. He was very thankful for that man.

My last story is amusing. Several young people were passing out coupons for Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. Two young girls came along and told them to get away from those “abortion people”. The young person pulled away said no these people have it right you shouldn’t kill your baby. After they walked away one of the prayers remarked that Ben and Jerry’s supports planned parenthood. Interesting is it not?

DAY 4 INTENTION
——————————————————
Pray that we each will daily put on the full armor
of God, so that we are strong in the Lord and the
power of His might.

——————————————————
SCRIPTURE
——————————————————

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against powers, against the
rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual
hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you
may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having
done all, to stand.

— Ephesians 6:12-13

REFLECTION by Carmen Pate, 40 Days for Life
——————————————————

I am confounded to see how the battle over the issue
of life is perceived more often in churches today as
political rather than spiritual.

Ironically, the enemy has used this twisted perception
to silence many in the body of Christ.

We must see the battle for what it is and we must
daily “put on” the armor God has given us:

>> Gird your waist with Truth (vs. 14) — Commit your
emotions to believe truth and to speak truth,
regardless of the repercussions.

>> Put on the breastplate of Righteousness (vs. 14) —
It will protect our hearts — the innermost springs of
our beings — from all unrighteousness so evident in
this fallen world.

>> Shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel
of Peace. (vs. 15) — Preparation is vital if we are
to be effective in God’s work.

>> Taking the shield of faith (vs.16) — The Accuser
will instill doubt, fear, and guilt. Faith acts as an
invisible shield that deflects such false accusations.

>> Taking the Helmet of salvation (vs.17) — A helmet
protects the head, the brain and in turn our mind and
thoughts. Satan hopes we will set aside divine
revelation for human reasoning.

>> Taking the sword of the Spirit (vs.17) — The Word
of God, the only offensive weapon in this armor, was
used by the Lord Jesus against Satan. The living Word
is powerful and effective.

Our armor is complete. We are ready to wage war, and
the next verse tells us how, “Praying always with all
prayer and supplication in the spirit.” (vs.18)

PRAYER
——————————————————

Dear Lord, as you lead us into the spiritual battle of
abortion may we be reminded that the battle is truly
Yours. Thank you for hearing our requests for
direction and protection. Thank you for the victory
that is ours because of Your Son Jesus, Amen.

Thanks for all you do for the unborn child in Pittsburgh!

Chaplain Steve
